For too long, the Void Knights have been diligently, yet quietly, fighting their battle against the pests in Pest Control. In this quest, you will travel to the Void Knights’ Outpost to inquire about the possibility of a pest slipping past their vigil and escaping onto the mainland. There, you’ll put your investigative and puzzle-solving skills to the test, wading through a torrent of small community squabbles to discover who could do such a thing.

The time has come to put names to the Void Knights’ faces and get inside their heads (literally, in some cases!) as you unscramble thoughts, guide broken memories into place and fight your way to the truth – but the truth is never black and white; there are always shades of grey…

We’ve changed the animations for all of the Strike, Bolt, Blast, Wave and Surge spells (for all four elements). These spells now use some of the game engine’s newer features such as particles, and have updated sound effects to accompany them.

We’ve added a smithing anvil to the town of Lumbridge, which can be found next to the furnace that’s a short distance north of Lumbridge Castle.

It is now much easier to obtain hunting supplies from the ruined boat in the penguin area.

We’ve added a counter for the friends and ignore interfaces in the lobby and in-game, so you can see how many entries are in each list and how many more spaces you have available.

You can now set a marker position or waypoint on the World Map. You’ll then get a hint arrow to help you get there! Also, scrolling the mouse wheel over the World Map will now zoom in/out focused upon the location of your mouse cursor.

It’s now faster and more efficient to churn cheese. When churning, you will now create wheels of cheese. While these wheels cannot be traded, they can be sliced into vast quantities of cheese which can be. Furthermore, you’ll get a little Cooking experience for each piece of cheese you slice. Each cheese wheel will give you a minimum of five pieces of cheese, but the higher your Cooking level, the more cheese you’re likely to get. In addition, new milk-seller NPCs can be found wandering near the dairy cows and dairy churns.

We’ve updated the climbing boots that you are able to buy after starting the Death Plateau quest. The price of existing boots will be increased to be more appropriate in relation to their usefulness (i.e. their combat stats). A new, second type of climbing boot will be provided to enable questers to complete the quest for the same low cost they used to be able to (the climbing boots for the quest will not have combat stats). You can buy either type of boots from Tenzing the Sherpa in his hut on the path to Death Plateau.

The quest begins at a barn north-east of Draynor Village, where a damsel in distress is looking for an adventurer to help her. Sounds like a straightforward little quest, right? Before long you’ll find yourself chipping teleport tablets, solving puzzles and entering a deadly battle where you’ll be fighting not just for your life, but for the reputation of adventurers everywhere.

It’s time to discover whether the bank guard is coming down from his tree, what the Wise Old Man is planning for the Wizards’ Tower and what Traiborn means when he talks about thingummywuts.

Over the weekend, players dressed up as their favourite characters (real or fictional, past or present) and sent us screenshots of their costumes. Then, on Sunday evening, a parade was held at Mudskipper Point for the 1,000+ entrants to show off their creations.

The competition closed at midnight on Sunday, and so began the task of finding the three most original, entertaining and creative entries. After lots of laughing, a little crying and some very poor impressions by the judges, we give you…

1st place:

Excluding the old janitor at the abandoned mine, this is probably everyone’s favourite hippy-and-talking-dog combo. Congrats to Mr_Kindheart for an instantly recognisable and original entry.

2nd place:

A great idea and nice attention to detail helped secure second place for Cassel_88, who managed to capture this image of the first ever boy band on their way to Fally Road Studio.

3rd place:

And in third place we have the appropriately named DrZoidbergMD depicting his sideways walking, fish-bone eating, woop-woop-wooping namesake from the future! I think it’s safe to say that it was the only lobster-based entry we received, which, in itself, makes it a winner to us!

Congratulations to you all!

These two quests have been made permanently free-to-play to replace Sheep Shearer and Witch’s Potion, which are now no longer classified as quests for anyone, as we no longer feel they’re up to the standard of other quests. Although Sheep Shearer and Witch’s Potion no longer appear in the Quest List, adventurers can still undertake them for their experience and item rewards (by talking to Fred the farmer in Lumbridge or Hetty the witch in Rimmington).

Myths of the White Lands and Swept Away will each award either 1 or 2 Quest Points, depending on your progress through Sheep Shearer and Witch’s potion before the update. No one will lose any Quest Points due to this change.

Yes, it was just one month ago that we brought the Players’ Gallery back in full force, and we’ve been overwhelmed by the sheer volume and positivity of your response. So, as promised, we’re back this month with another selection of RuneScape-inspired masterpieces for you to enjoy.

There were a lot of worthy contenders, but, after a great deal of discussion, debate and Duel Arena fighting in the studio car park, we’ve selected the eight which made us smile the most. From malfunctioning crashed stars and worried wizards, to a pink mage and a dedicated butterfly catcher – we hope you like our selection too.

We also have the small matter of announcing this month’s featured artist… Our most accomplished piece comes from Marikdebie and their submission, “Duel Arena”. The RuneScape “Lookey-Likey” Competition
There are so many different costume combinations in RuneScape that, with a little imagination, it’s surprisingly easy to make a pretty convincing lookalike! So, this weekend, we’re holding a costume competition in which we’re looking for the player who manages the most convincing transformation into a famous person or character! Think of it like Halloween in July, just without the candy…and no pumpkins.

Jagex Clan Cup Opening Parade
This weekend sees the first match of this year’s eagerly awaited Jagex Clan Cup. In the opening parade clans have the chance to meet fellow combatants, show off their team and quiz clan guru Mod Timbo. Whether you want to celebrate the cup, size up the competition or just be a clan fan keen and throw your lacy vambraces at the feet of your favourite clan star, we’d love to see you there.

Clan Wars Triumvirate Challenge
After last week’s skill-based challenge, this week’s challenge is a classic punch up in a classic venue. Lords, Judges and Reavers will do their best to show their dominance and pick up some valuable Triumvirate points along the way. Not signed up to the Triumvirate yet? The quest requirements include the highest current quest levels for Magic (77), Construction (68) and Crafting (67), so get levelling now if you want to tackle Love Story when it’s launched. For more information, check the blog here. We are also improving the look of dragons in the game with this update, so look out for some scorching new graphics to accompany the summer heat.

The next update this month looks at new rewards to use outside of Daemonheim. Originally, the dungeon entrances just east of the Wilderness required vast amounts of resources to build, which were to be gathered in secret by the dungeon’s workers. To this end, the forces behind it created many resource dungeons around RuneScape, closed off and hidden from prying eyes. As adventurers become wiser regarding the mysteries of Daemonheim, they will find they are able to discover and enter these hidden resource dungeons scattered around the world. There are more than fifteen of these resource dungeons to be found in existing areas, such as Edgeville Dungeon (several being available in the free game), each of which requires a certain Dungeoneering level to enter. Each resource dungeon provides a one-off reward for finding it, plus resources such as new rune rocks or the lair of a mighty frost dragon (lvl 166)!

If that doesn’t float your Fremennik longboat, how about the new class ring rewards we’re introducing for use within Daemonheim. With three rings each for rangers, mages, warriors and skillers, we’re sure that everyone will find at least one class ring to suit their play style. Just choose your favourite ring ability and use your Dungeoneering tokens to upgrade it up to tier 10; you even can switch your ring’s class for ‘hybriding’ within a dungeon, so long as you’re not in combat. Perhaps you’re a skiller who wants higher returns from resource spots; maybe you’re a big melee tank who wants to be able to soak up even more damage; or you could be a ranger who needs to be able to snipe targets for even greater damage; and even mages can get huge boosts to elemental damage with the Blazer class ring.

We’re also adding the Construction skill to Dungeoneering in the form of a new building spot to the smuggler’s room. Players with the appropriate Construction level will be able to create their own locations in the start room, whether it’s a prayer altar or farming spot, or even the new group gatestone portal (fantastic for getting your team about within larger dungeons), there’s bound to be something useful you can build (assuming you have the appropriate materials, of course).

We also plan to have the work for single-player instance dungeons completed, so those solo Dungeoneers who need to log out for five minutes or who suffer some infernal disconnection issues will find their dungeon still remains when they come back. Our final update this month starts with a rework of our old treasure trails. We wanted to make sure that players felt more rewarded for doing every treasure trail and not just rely on blind luck to get a treasure trail-only reward or cool pieces of costume. So we’ve changed all of the existing trails to ensure that you’ll always get a unique, trail-specific reward every time you open the reward casket at the end! Naturally, to achieve this, we needed to add a plethora of new rewards and challenges, so this update will also introduce a brand new set of treasure trails – called the elite treasure trails – and new rewards.

These trails (dropped only by high-level boss monsters like the Skeletal Horror and Bork) introduce a new puzzle known as the celtic knot. These knot puzzles are similar in style to the sliding tile puzzles, but with a whole new set of challenges to solve them. You may also be asked to fight a Guthix wizard while searching for the 150+ new rewards, many of which have been added to the existing trails in the game. Look out for dragon masks, 3rd Age prayer gear, holy ranger gear, treasure trail-specific familiars and animal staves to name just a few.

Also, for something a little different this summer, why not join in with the in-game RuneScape Summer Festival? Run entirely by our player support teams, the event will feature parades and the next round of the Clan Wars Triumvirate Challenge. For more information, read this news.

The Jagex Clan Cup is set to see which clans are the best within RuneScape in three different fields – Combat, Skilling and a combination of them both. Set within Clan Wars, Stealing Creation or one of the many skilling areas across Gielinor, it’s sure to set pulses racing as clans battle it out.

Registration starts Saturday 19th June 12:01 AM BST and closes on Friday 25th June 11:59 PM BST. All you have to do is register your clan with our Community Management team for each of the different sections that you’d like to take part in. For more information, and how to sign up, click here.

These ancient effigies seemingly possess a will of their own and desire knowledge from the adventurers who hold them. Initially, an effigy will require you to have level 91 in one of two skills (chosen randomly) to investigate it, from which you will receive healthy amounts of experience in the skill you choose. As effigies absorb more and more of your knowledge, they will require ever higher levels in other skills – level 93, then level 95, and, finally, level 97. If you can supply the ancient effigy with all the knowledge it seeks, you may discover something of the secrets it holds…

Less experienced adventurers who luckily manage to obtain an ancient effigy, but who don’t have the skill levels to supply it with the knowledge it seeks, can always ask for a helping hand through the Assist System (the person who assists will earn the XP, but you may still end up with something for your troubles at the end). Alternatively, if you lack both experience and patience, and would prefer more instant gratification, Historian Minas at Varrock Museum will be more than happy to take an effigy off your hands in exchange for a small reward.

Just to refresh your memories, over 7,000 players from 12 communities took part in this tournament. After many battles, the Polish team triumphed to win the first International Fight Knights Tournament. Second place went to the Belgian/Dutch team and third place to the Finnish team.

GUNZ_BOSS!

GUNZ_BOSS didn’t hold back and managed to score a whopping 192 kills without dying! Impressive stuff indeed and I’m sure you’ll all agree a worthy winner of our first kill streak competition.

The competition will run all this weekend from 00.01 BST on Saturday right up until Sunday night at 23.59 BST, and will be held across all five Castle Wars worlds. At the end of the weekend, we’ll look at who’s dealt the most kills without dying and announce the winner early next week.

The most prolific Castle Wars killer will win 12 months of membership and some exclusive Castle Wars concept art framed and signed by the team.

Castle Wars is an activity for RuneScape members, so if your membership has lapsed or you’re thinking about checking out members for the first time, there’s never been a better time to jump in.

To get back in the swing of things, speak to the court clerk for your first case: Roger Murray Vs Mugger (level: 6). The law has finally caught up with this notorious brigand, and you must decide whether to bring him to justice or stand up for the little guy. To win you will have to match fingerprints, ask your witnesses the right questions and present the evidence that best supports your case, then appeal to the Jury member most likely to empathise with your argument.

Don’t think it’s just Mugger (level: 6) going under the gavel. Many of RuneScape’s most famous (and infamous) residents will soon be having their day in court. Is the Drunken Dwarf a menace to the community or just a loveable, sozzled old fool? Is the river troll perfectly within his rights to defend his property or simply a crazed, fish-smelling vigilante? Pick your side and state your case.

After sealing Mugger (level: 6)’s fate in your first case, keep an eye open while skilling and killing for a court summons drop. These can be received as drops, from Treasure Trails and fishing caskets, or by pickpocketing certain NPCs – check the Game Guide for more information. Each summons you receive will give you access to a new case; just show it to the court clerk when you get one. There are five cases available to complete now, but, before too long, another eleven cases will find their way into the judge’s hands, so get cracking.

For all your hard work, you’ll be amply rewarded. Choosing to defend will give you Defence XP and prosecuting the guilty will get you Attack XP – the amount of XP you receive relates to the difficulty of the case. As well as XP, some cases may reward you with a little something extra: expect to eat humble pie, try on some new wigs, and receive other such useful items.

We’re now returning Demo Mode to its original purpose, so it is currently not available to existing players (unless they already have a Demo Mode save state on their computer).

You can access RuneScape Classic here. New sign-ups should log into Classic worlds 2-6; Classic 1 is only accessible to those veteran Classic players who have stuck with it all the way through.

RuneScape Classic is the predecessor to the current RuneScape game. It was closed to new members over four years ago, but we want for players to be able to try out this important part of our history.

Right now, we’re in the process of contacting the lucky winner to arrange their visit and get their lifetime RuneScape membership added to their account! So, keep an eye on your inbox in case that winner is you!

As soon as everything is confirmed, we’ll announce the name of the lucky person on the official Big Ticket FAQ/Discussion forum thread.
We’ve now awarded four Big Tickets in total (three prize draws and one competition winner) so there are still 20 Big Tickets waiting to be claimed. For those of you eager to win, here’s a quick reminder of how to be in with a chance of getting your hands on the best prize we have ever offered to our players:

1. Enter any competition which offers a Big Ticket as a prize.
2. Enter our monthly prize draws by simply being a member on the time and date of the draw; the more membership accounts you have, the more automatic entries you will have in each draw!
3. Send us a postcard in the mail for a free entry in a monthly draw. Make sure your postcard is marked ‘Big Ticket Draw’ and send it to Jagex, St. John’s Innovation Centre, Cambridge, CB4 0WS, United Kingdom. The postcard must include the date of the draw you are entering and your RuneScape account name.
4. Get involved in the community! Whether that’s by being part of a clan, fansite, roleplaying organisation, story-writing club or any other areas of the community… We’ll be giving Big Tickets to those players who we feel really contribute to making RuneScape what it is today!

Speaking of prize draws, the next one will take place at 15:00 (3PM) BST on Wednesday 30th June 2010. At the time of the draw, all accounts with membership will automatically be entered, as well as all postcard entries received before the next draw. Don’t forget to include the date of the draw on your postcard.

Behind the Scenes – June

Characters from RuneScape are due to be arrested for crimes ranging from Littering to Assault & Battery, and will need a hero to represent them. To prosecute or defend their cases, you’ll need to obtain a ‘court summons’ from Treasure Trails, by pickpocketing NPCs or from a few other methods. After gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, comparing fingerprints and identifying weak members of the Jury, you’ll have the chance to prove their innocence or send them away for a very long time. The choice is entirely yours, and healthy doses of Attack or Defence XP await those clever enough to solve the case.

The cases are written to make you think and raise a chuckle, so we’re hoping you’ll enjoy solving them as much as we enjoyed writing them. Fancy prosecuting the Drunken Dwarf for disruptive behaviour? Perhaps you feel his freedom to call everyone “matey” and ram kebabs in their hands is a basic Dwarven Right (don’t worry, it won’t result in the return of him as a random event). Thanks to everyone who gave us feedback after reading the blog: it really helped to shape the content, especially in terms of where the court summons drops come from.

The first courtroom launch will feature 5 different cases and a new piece of costume. You can expect more cases over the next twelve months: we have 16 cases planned in total!

Also this month, we will be introducing ancient effigies to the game, available through high-level combat. These objects ask very experienced (level 91-97) players to use a variety of skills to engage in a little restoration. Players with insufficient skill levels will still be able to use the Assist System to work at the effigy and claim the benefits. Naturally, asking for skills of these kinds of levels makes for some very generous XP rewards.

After 2008’s Spirit of Summer and Summer’s End quests, and the Mysteries of the Mahjarrat quests in 2009, we decided to release another complete quest series this year. As usual, we want to outdo ourselves and, rather than settle for a storyline made up of just quests, we have decided to make three quests and a related activity! Throughout the series, you’ll learn more about the different orders of knights in the game and the relationship between them all, especially regarding the mysterious Void Knights and their pests.

June will see the launch of the first of these quests – Quiet Before the Swarm: an ‘intermediate level’ quest (the highest requirement is 42 Strength) that is heavily puzzle and story-oriented, linking to favourite characters of ours like Sir Tiffy. There’s no equipment preparation needed for the quest, aside from completing (but not necessarily winning) a single game of Pest Control. In other news…

Some of the ‘In other news…’ you can expect to see this month will be: adding a waypoint marker to your world map; making it easier to get hunter supplies from the penguin areas; and adding new functionality to the Orb of Oculus (machinima camera). We’ve also opened RS Classic sign-up until Tuesday 15th June for any members who fancy a nostalgic trip to yesteryear.

If community events are more your type of thing, why not get involved in our Triumvirate community game? There are a series of events happening, focusing on three factions – the Reavers, Lords and Judges. These events are run and organised by our Player Support teams and you, the players. If you’d like to know more, check out the main Triumvirate thread. This weekend sees a huge series of 27 Castle Wars battles, making use of last week’s Castle Wars update (originally intended for a June launch, but launched a week early for you to war over the Bank Holiday weekend). This weekend (Friday 4th to Sunday 6th June), members of the three Triumvirate factions will meet to take part in 27 Castle Wars battles across three game worlds (and three time zones), supported by J-Mods from each faction.

Full sign-up details for this challenge can be found on the Castle Wars Triumvirate Challenge thread, on which you’ll also find more information on where and when each battle is set to take place.

To take part in this challenge, though, you’ll first need to become a member of one of the three Triumvirate factions – Reavers, Judges or Lords – if you’ve not already done so. You can do this on the main Triumvirate thread.

If you log into Classic during this two-week period (using your normal username and password), you will continue to be able to do so after the two weeks are over. If, however, you do not, you will miss out on the chance to do so, so give it a try.

If your RuneScape account is already ‘Classic-enabled’ (either from the last time we did this or from before that), then you do not have to log into Classic during these two weeks to keep it as such, but you are more than welcome to log in to say hello to those players new to Classic.
