We wanted to address you today about Nexon’s efforts to fight online hacking and improve online safety for all Nexon gamers.

The importance of online security gained national attention following Google’s revelation that their Gmail service was hacked in China. Since then, no less than 36 companies have come forward, and detailed similar problems that they have faced. As an online game company, one of Nexon’s most important missions is protecting player accounts from theft. This is a common goal shared by every online company, and achieving this goal is an ongoing fight to protect our players.

At the end of 2009, we received increased reports of accounts being compromised. While we have said little about this publicly, we have been aggressively investigating and fighting this issue and the groups behind it on multiple fronts. In order to maintain the effectiveness of these efforts, we cannot provide much detail, but we would like to share with you some of the progress we have made so far.

First and foremost, our customer support team has been working to provide relief for people who have been affected by a recent account compromise issue. Once we have more details to share, affected players who have submitted a support ticket will be contacted individually by our support team. We are very thankful to our players who have been patient during this ongoing process. Our goal is to provide more updates as we further develop our relief program.

We have also taken the following steps to improve players’ online safety:

• Enhanced the security of our technological infrastructure. This includes, but is not limited to, aggressive blocking of IP addresses originating from areas outside our service region.

• Stepped up legal enforcement efforts against malicious online users and organized groups both foreign and domestic. We’re currently working very closely with law enforcement personnel in multiple countries across our service area and are actively pursuing criminal and civil cases against hack site and private server operators who are in violation of national and international laws.

• Improved online safety features to help our players safely visit not just our websites, but all websites across the Internet. In just one example, we recognized that many people were using the same login credentials across multiple websites. In order to address that issue, we recently initiated a password update campaign to encourage all of our players to update their passwords regularly.

In other areas, we are committed to improving our customer support. We revamped the Nexon Support website, upgraded our ticketing system, and launched the Nexon Knowledge Base to help players find the answers they need faster. Within our games, we are integrating a new spam and language filters to fight advertising and inappropriate comments.

We have also put more emphasis on our community outreach efforts. Most recently, we launched Facebook pages, actively engaged with our forum community, and increased our general communications both about the games and especially during maintenances in order to keep you informed.

It has been almost five years since Nexon America opened its doors and we are humbled and truly appreciative of the support and devotion shown by the dedicated fans of all of Nexon’s games. You are the lifeblood of Nexon America, and we can’t thank you enough. We look forward to many more years of enjoyment and safety on the Internet.

Do you have questions about how the Goblin Pad works?

Some of you have been asking us exactly how the Goblin Pad character security system works in Dungeon Fighter Online. Here is a quick guide:

What is the Goblin Pad?

Goblin Pad is an interactive security feature used to protect your account from hackers, dirty players, and malicious third party applications. Though you are not required to use the Goblin Pad feature, it is highly recommended that you do so.

Setting Up Your Goblin Pad PIN

The Goblin Pad can be found in the Service Menu right underneath the “Item Shop” listing.

When you first click here, you will be taken to the “Request” tab of the Goblin Pad UI. Here, you will be asked to move a little green goblin to four numbered bunkers. The sequence of numbers you choose will be your four-digit PIN. Once you have chosen your PIN, you will be asked to enter it again for verification purposes. 

If you still have questions about how to create a PIN, click on the “Demo” tab on the far right to do a test run. (This will not create a PIN number for your account but rather allow you to practice creating one.)

Using the Goblin Pad

The next time you log into the game, you will be asked to enter your Goblin PIN when performing any of the following actions:
 
- Use / Drop / Trade Gold or Items 
- Purchase a Skill 
- Disassemble Equipment
 
Entering your Goblin PIN is almost exactly like when you created it. Move the green goblin to the correct numbered bunkers in the correct sequence. However, now, there are two red goblins trying to stop you. Get around them and into the right bunker.

What does the Goblin Pad PIN cover?

Your newly created Goblin Pad PIN number will be the key to your whole account. You will use the same PIN for all of the characters you create under a single account. When the game prompts you to enter your Goblin Pad PIN, you will only have three tries to enter it correctly. If you fail to enter the correct pin three times in a row, you will be blocked from buying, selling and trading gold and items. We suggest you write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

In the event that your buy/sell/trade functionas are blocked, please submit a customer support ticket through. Click on the “Customer Service” option under the “Support” menu in the lower left hand corner of any page on the DFO website. Then click “Submit A Ticket.” (Note: You must be logged in to submit a customer support ticket.)

If at any point you wish to change your Goblin Pad PIN or disable it, just enter the Goblin Pad screen and select the “Change” or “Discard” tab. When you do either, you will be asked to enter your Goblin Pad PIN again.

Lady Arad here. Thanks for all your great responses to the first Dungeon Fighter Online Beta Journal. We’re tremendously excited as we work toward our launch this summer. 

Eastward Ho!

Much of what we’re doing to get the game ready for launch is done behind the scenes and is pretty technical, which means that it often isn’t visible to you the player. Take for example, the problem of latency. This is our number one “must fix” issue before launch. As I mentioned in the last Beta Journal, bringing Dungeon Fighter Online to North America isn’t as simple as just translating Korean text into English. There’s a whole technical infrastructure we’re dealing with to get the game’s code to run well in a part if the world where the geographic distances are much larger and the Internet architecture more primitive than in Korea. Also, DFO works on a peer to peer system, which means that when you play with other people you are connecting to them directly rather than all players connecting to one central server. Though this allows for more flexibility, it also presents its own set of problems, especially when the connection between you and other players is weak.

Step One in combating the latency issue was to set up a user connectivity meter in the game. This allows you to see how strong your connection is with other players in your party or in your Arena room. You can read more about this meter by going to our FAQ page and scrolling down to the qustion “Why do I experience lag when I’m playing with other players?”

Step Two was to split the channels into “West” and “East” channels. So if you are nearer the west coast, you will most likely connect better with people in the “West” channel. And if you are nearer the east coast, you will most likely connect better with people in the ”East” channel. 

Step 3 is the eventual introduction of an actual DFO server on the East Coast of North America. This will improve things enormously just by reducing the physical distance information needs to travel. The thing is, you don’t just “open up a server.” There are a lot of considerations that go into that decision. What company will house your server? Where on the east coast should it be? What are the system requirements necessary for the new server? 

All this takes time to work through, but we understand that from your perspective, it may seem sometimes that nothing has changed. However, rest assured that we are fully committed to reducing latency dramatically by the time we launch in June.

Internal and External Code

These connectivity issue isn’t the only thing that can cause latency. We’ve also been combing through the code to find blockages and working them out so you enjoy a more fluid gaming experience. Each time we do that though, we need to test it internally to make sure we haven’t created as many problems as we’ve solved. We can’t compromise player security or the game’s integrity just for a faster response time, so we’re constantly testing new builds of the game that you never see because they’re not stable enough. We’re making tremendous progress in this area as well.

A Quick Trip to GDC

Finally, I wanted to quickly mention the just completed Game Developer’s Conference. If you aren’t familiar with this event, it’s an annual conference where the best and brightest in the industry get together to discuss the state of the industry, network and share tips and tricks that help us to make the gaming industry better all around. This year’s GDC was very important to our team. We were able to show the game to the press and other developers, and we were delighted at the extremely positive reception DFO received.

GDC was also a reminder of why I wanted to put these beta journals out. It’s always important to never get so caught up in the day-to-day of game development that you forget to communicate with others – especially the most important people in the process…our players. We want you to know what’s happening as we move toward launch. Even when you don’t see something new and improved in the game every day, you’ll know we’re continuing to make progress toward launch!

We’re temporarily turning the Noob-O-Meter off so you can enjoy DFO with your low-level friends. Don’t worry, we’ll give you a heads up before we turn the Noob-O-Meter back on, so just relax and have fun.

For all you Dungeon Fighters who might not know what the Noob-O-Meter is, it’s a feature in DFO that reduces the experience gained and gold dropped for characters who try to level up faster by partying with high level characters. It’s designed to make sure players level naturally, experiencing DFO the way it was meant to be.

It’ll be back, but while it’s down, get those higher level characters to show you all the tricks of those lower level dungeons.

We have received reports of certain characters crashing or being unable to log into Dungeon Fighter Online. Please be aware that we have determined that this is an issue with certain items in the game that disconnect players when detected. If your character possessed or came into contact with any of these items, you may have experienced technical difficulties.

To resolve this issue, we will conduct a brief Emergency Server Maintenance. As a result of this maintenance, no characters will be rolled back, have their items removed, or have their inventories otherwise altered.

IMPORTANT: All players affected by this issue will receive compensation. At this time, no further details are available. Full notes on this compensation, however, will be posted soon.

Nexon’s primary goal is to provide our DFO players with a safe gaming environment in which you don’t have to worry about hackers and farmers spoiling your fun. To this end, we are currently implementing a series of aggressive measures that target hackers and gold farmers.

Some of these measures include:
- Upgrades to DFO’s security system so as to better identify hackers and gold farmers
- A stricter policy for dealing with identified hackers and associated accounts
- Harsher legal action to shut down websites that sell DFO gold
- Frequent updates to block known hack tools
- Wider monitoring of sharp changes in the game economy

As we take these steps, we would like to also enlist the DFO community to help us keep the game safe, secure and fun. Here are some things you can do:

1. Create a Goblin Pad password – Take advantage of the Goblin Pad. The Goblin Pad code keeps potential hackers from altering your inventory without your permission. You can read up on it HERE.

2. Change your password every three months – We recently launched the Password Update Campaign to encourage players to change their password every three months. Changing your password frequently is a vital step in the protection of your account. Read up on the importance of this HERE.

3. Do not share accounts – Account sharing is against the Nexon Terms of Use. More importantly, it opens your account up to disaster. Please remember that neither Nexon employees nor GMs will ever ask for your password. You can read more about it HERE.

4. Do not buy or sell in-game gold and items for real money – The selling or buying of in-game gold and items for real money is also a violation of our Terms of Use and a bannable offense. More importantly, it ruins the in-game economy, creates an imbalance in the game’s dynamics, and deflates the fun of the game for everybody else who loves playing. 

With your help, we can minimize the impact of hackers and spammers out there and make the gaming environment fun and safe for all.

What’s BlockParty? Well, click on the Blockheads at the top of the screen and find out! They’ve spent a lot of time putting together an animatory infotainment spectacular for you to watch, so sit back and enjoy.

During the first weekend of our Open Beta, we increased the daily allotment of Life Tokens from one (1) Token to three (3) Tokens. The reaction from Dungeon Fighter Online players was overwhelmingly positive. Thus, starting tomorrow, September 29th, at 6AM Pacific (9AM Eastern) Dungeon Fighters will wake up to at least three Life Tokens in their inventory.

The same rules governing the Life Token allotment still apply. Life Tokens are not cumulative, so the full three will only be granted to Dungeon Fighters who have a Life Token inventory of zero at 6AM, and each morning, you will only be allowed to receive as many Life Tokens as will increase your current inventory to three. For instance, if you have one Life Token, you will be given two more; if two Life Tokens, one more. And if you have three or more Life Tokens, you will not receive any Life Tokens for that day. At least, not through the daily allotment system.

Remember, if you are in a Party and die, a Party member may spend a Life Token to revive you. Just promise to return the favor when you get a fresh supply the next day.

We trust that you will use this power to thwart death wisely.
